Born A Crime details life in apartheid South Africa, and the consequences of growing up as evidence that a crime has been committed. By simply being, Trevor is evidence that the law has been broken. Born A Crime is a coming of age story that any teen can relate to; it is important because it helps students learn about life, growing up, and what the world is like in places other than where they live. Reading stories like Noah's thoughtfully, and drawing conclusions about what has been read, is much more useful that shielding kids from the reality of world.

Her book is a reflection of the reality that many Mexican American children facing poverty and abuse suffer, and it gives students opportunities to expand their minds, challenge their own beliefs, and become informed about the consequences of decisions, all while encouraging critical thinking and exploration of our world. In the play, Shakespeare's clever wordplay often includes references to body parts and sex acts -- the words "maidenhead" and "whore" are used creatively, for example. This bawdy language is often highlighted with physical gesturing when the play is staged, but the book is more clever than suggestive. Actual sex, other than kissing, takes place "off-screen," in that we only know Romeo and Juliet spend one night together as husband and wife because we see them part early the next morning. The themes of love and desire are important in building the conflicts in the piece.

Also one of the books that has appeared on the suggested works list for student choice free-response questions at least twice since 2003 and is a solid option for the student choice essay. Winner of: Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction, American Book Award. Beloved is rich in structural complexity and symbolism. Natural symbols such as trees (Sethe’s “choke cherry” scar, Denver’s box elder bushes, and the trees on Sweet Farm plantation) illustrate the contrast between the beauty and brutality of the natural world and the world of slavery. A haunting central section of the novel evokes the suffering of the Middle Passage, relating it imagistically to hell and the grave. Because the novel is based on the actual events of the life of Margaret Garner, an escaped slave who killed one of her own children, it can also be read in conjunction with nonfiction slave narrative accounts of the time. Beloved is widely recognized as a work of significant literary and artistic merit, for which it has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize; and, in 2006 named the “best work of American fiction of the last 25 years” by the New York Times Book Review. His plays were not written as plays which had an immediate life as a published document. They were written very quickly and put on stage very quickly." Kenneth Branagh I do my best to avoid scenes with nudity; however, it is possible to miss the beginning of a scene. Students work on formative and summative assignments while watching the film and we do skip scenes. Most high school students read this play and the film helps them access the language and understand the themes. It is appropriate to see the film prior to reading the play or while it is being read. Shakespeare wrote for people to view his plays, not to only read them. The 1996 film version of ''Hamlet,'' starring Kenneth Branagh, is considered by many to be the best film version of Shakespeare's most famous play and is famous for being the only unabridged version of the play. Branagh makes bold choices that demonstrate his unique interpretation of the play. His directorial skill makes his Hamlet one of the most visually stunning Shakespeare films ever made. This includes widescreen exterior shots as well as bright, colorful interiors. The film includes gorgeous, epic visuals and interprets unresolved issues in the play, such as the nature of Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship. First performed at the religious festivals held as ceremonies of worship by the citizens of Athens, in 429 B.C.E., it depicts the tragic undoing of King Oedipus as he faces the dark secrets of his origins. It belongs to a trilogy of plays called the Theban plays, all set in the kingdom of Thebes and featuring the same characters: Oedipus; his daughters, Antigone and Ismene; and sons, Polynices and Eteocles. Sophocles is considered one of the most influential Greek playwrights in drama. His works portrayed tragic heroes, relationship to gods, responsibility to the state versus to family, and characters dealing with mental pressure. He also abandoned the common practice of presenting tragedies as trilogies often exploring the same subject. Oedipus Rex is perhaps the central work on the conflict between fate and free will, and lent its name to the inventor of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud, when he identified the Oedipus complex, the primal urge of a male child to kill his father and marry his mother. It is a short excerpt from the beginning of book seven of Plato’s book, The Republic. Plato tells the allegory in the context of education; it is ultimately about the nature of philosophical education, and it offers an insight into Plato’s view of education (Lodhi). . Plato's Theory of Forms maintains that two distinct levels of reality exist: the visible world of sights and sounds that we inhabit and the intelligible world of Forms that stand above the visible world and gives it being. The Matrix, and all the humans in it are akin to the prisoners watching shadows on the cave wall. Plato says of a freed prisoner, “When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities.” Neo symbolizes the prisoner who escapes the cave and Morpheus the “instructor” Neo meets in the real world. Plato personifies the ‘unenlightenment’ of human nature through the allegory of prisoners chained in a cave whose entire perception of reality is but shadows cast on a wall in front of them. For Plato, the shadows on the wall are not reality but rather mere reflections of more real objects. The 1999 film The Matrix by the Wachowskis is largely Platonic; the film mirrors Plato's allegory almost exactly in structure using ancient philosophies about the truth behind reality, but the most central to the overarching framework of the film is adapted from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave." The film explores the journey of one man from the Matrix, a simulation ruled by deceitful robots, into the enlightenment of the ‘real world.’ While Plato’s skepticism of the existence of the external world seems to be at the forefront of the film, The Matrix also argues the anti-Platonic possibility that perhaps the Matrix isn’t any less real than the ‘real world’.
